The requirement of accrediting large number of Colleges by NBA (National Board of Accreditation) is posing a big challenge before Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Therefore, suggestions came from MHRD to set-up a Section 8 Company under Companies Act 2013 for accreditation of academic institutions with an objective to promote and recognize excellence in technical education in colleges and universities—at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels and to give the benefits of accreditation process to the various institutions, students, employers, and the public at large.
IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur jointly stepped forward to take-up the voluminous work of maintaining the standard and quality of other Institutions through accreditation process by taking services of its existing in-service and retired faculty members. Under the purview of this initiative, initially it is suggested to accredit at least 1000 Colleges per year and for this it is required to involve at least 500 faculty members from a pool of 1500 faculty from these three IIT's. The IIT Foundation for Accreditation and Assessment is a Section 8 Company with the three institutions as members created for taking up the assessment and accreditation work in line with the best international practices.
